I thought it would be useful to set out where I am currently planning to make my photographs for ‘Always Follow Ur Dreams!!’ on a map. This is it….

There seems to be an area in the centre around Stepney which I have overlooked. I must have a look around there….

Interesting you’re doing this – I bought a book on historical Lancashire murders some time ago – never managed to get around to doing anything with it though.

Yes a similar type of idea…my title may be a bit misleading as the location are not all associated with crimes per se. Joel Sternfeld did something similar with his ‘On this Site’ series. Simon Norfolk also did a series revisiting the sites of genocides and Richard Misrach returned to places of environmental disasters in ‘Petrochemical America’. Misrach’s use of text with images is also pretty relevant to what I am trying to do.

Interesting to see it laid out like that. Have you been watching the BBC1 series “Ripper Street” Keith?

Hi Keith, I am rather behind with everyone’s blogs and study progress but this looks really interesting. Not sure if it is relevant, or if you already know about it, but there is a Jewish cemetery between Brady St and Granary Rd (near Sainsbury’s) and also a drinking fountain memorial to Ed7 opposite the old Royal London hospital donated by the Jewish community. I often think that all the closed pubs (often converted to flats or shops) are a striking indication of how the area has been changed by incoming cultures (ie largely teetotal Muslims). The smoking ban is also to blame obvs! : )

Thanks for the encouragement and the links Helen…..the pub angle is an interesting one in light of the largely Muslim community around Banglatown. There is a pub in Cheshire Street which used to be owned by the Kray brothers which I was interested in but now I’ve focused on immigration it no longer fits. The cemetery sounds particularly interesting given that it could serve as a metaphor for the Jewish community departing the area…

Have you seen this work by David Gillanders ‘uncivilised’ I will probably reference it in some way for my final run in on Documentary, but I think it has some resonance to your project… http://www.davidgillanders.com/documentary/uncivilised/

Great link John. Yes this does seem to fit very well with my work. I plan to do a review of his work for the blog and have a careful think about his work. The traditional black and white film gives it a nostalgic feel which seems to reference history and his truncated text leaves much to the imagination…
