Developing my Reflective Account

Posted on January 10, 2013

7

For my final assessment submission for the OCA Advanced Photography Course I need to submit a Reflective Account drawn from my learning log. The idea is to present my thoughts of what I have learned throughout the course. I have given this some thought and feel that I need to plan the structure of this document so that I can start to assemble my thinking piece by piece in this blog. I may also need to revisit the blog to make sure it comprehensively covers the things that have been important to my learning experience. The pieces will then be drawn together into a document for submission which is meant to be around 5000 words.

My first thoughts on the structure of the Reflective Account is set out below:

  1. Introduction. This will be a brief statement of what the document is about and how it is structured.
  2. The Learning Contract and Scope of my Studies. This will include my early thoughts on the genre of photography I wished to study, the scope defined in the learning contract agreed with my tutor, development of the theme for my studies as course progressed, key learning points from my experiences with developing a course of study.
  3. Key Photographic influences. Here I plan to discuss the work of photographers who have particularly influenced my thinking from the outset and as the course progressed. This will briefly discuss the nature of each photographer’s practice, sources of information on their work which I have accessed (this will include books, websites and exhibitions), what I have learned from them and how in broad terms I have applied this learning in my own work.
  4. Learning from the Assignments. In this section I plan to recap on each of my assignments, present my thoughts on how I think the assignment went and most importantly what I learned from the experience.
  5. Technical Development throughout the Course. This section will set out my initial learning goals with regards to technical development and what I have actually achieved. Here I expect to report on my learning with regards to managing the portrait subject, artificial lighting, use of medium format cameras, use of large format cameras, production of video shows for display of photographs, and darkroom skills.
  6. Broader photographic development. Here I will spell out how I have continued to maintain a broader interest in photography outside the specific scope of my field of studies. Here I will discuss the books I’ve read, exhibitions I’ve visited, photography workshops I’ve attended, OCA Study Visits in which I’ve participated, work I have had published and my involvement in WEAREOCA blog discussions.
  7. Conclusions.  Here I will recap on what are the key things I have learned as I have progressed through the course and my thoughts on how I might take this learning forward to the next step.

I intend to share this outline with Jesse Alexander to make sure I am on the right track.

Very interesting Keith. As someone who is standing a long way down the road behind you it’s useful to have oversight of what’ts to come at the far end if I get that far. It provides signposts in a way for the things I should be looking out for now so that I know where they are on the way back to keep within the metaphor. I would be interested to know how you fine tune this in response to your tutors input.

Ooh! Now this is something useful! Keith, it’s really organised and will give your account direction. If you don’t mind, I’m going to nab this outline as the basis for structure when/if I get to end of TAOP

No pig head yet! Should have arrived yesterday—so am little stress. Wanted to have a least got images in bag before Saturday in case a tutor asked whether it was done when were at Tate!! The outline really is useful—because I tend to witter too much. Really appreciate it—thank you.

Good plan. Given the amount of work you’ve done and the scope of your interests I reckon it’s going to be a book ‘Advancing Through Photography – My Journey’!
